We are excited to announce an improved Accelerated Reader Program for our school. You will now be able to access your child's Accelerated Reader information on line through the Accelerated Reader's parent company called Renaissance Place Home Connect. On this website you will be able to see details about your child's progress for each grading period, the last quiz taken by your child, and a list of all the books that your child has taken tests on since starting the AR program. In the past, our students have only had access to the quizzes that we purchased (app.6400). Now, we have access to all the quizzes that Accelerated Reader makes. There are over 110,000 quizzes available for our students. Another exciting feature is the AR Book Finder. When you click on the link, you will be able to search for AR books. Once you find a book you are interested in, you will be able to see the book level and points for the book. Your child has been issued a user name and password that will be used with the following programs: Accelerated Reader Star Program (testing program used for Accelerated Reader to give student's a reading level) Moodle (homework website) Orchard (program that allows students to practice reading and math skills in the media center) Network folder (each student has storage on the network so they can save work) Media Center If you click on our homepage you will see in the bottom left corner under SCHOOL TOOLS , two links have been set up for you. Schoolwork is the link to the homework site called Moodle, and AR@ Home is the link to the Accelerated Reader site. The same login will work for both programs. |

| Here is a brief explanation of our Accelerated Reader Program: Students will take a test (STAR) at the beginning of the school year to determine their Grade Equivalent score and their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). ZPD is the range of book readability levels that will result in optimal growth in reading ability. In other words, it is a range of books that will challenge a student without causing frustration or loss of motivation. Once the ZPD is determined, students will read books within their reading zone and set goals to attain the determined Accelerated Reader Points (ARP). Every student will have a reading program specifically designed for him/her. Students will receive a classroom grade in their Communication Skills class based on the attainment of these goals. | ||
| AR points are based on a book's readability level and length. Points measure reading practice. In a study conducted by the Institute for Academic Excellence it was discovered that students spend an average of only seven minutes a day practicing reading outside of school. The study also found that an hour of reading practice outside of school produced dramatic increases in reading growth and that there was a positive correlation between reading practice and standardized comprehension tests. | ||
| Students will be monitored regularly. Students will be required to read books within their zone and make an 80% or higher on their AR tests. If problems arise, the teachers will make adjustments accordingly. A letter to the parents will be sent home. Parents will receive the results of the STAR test as well as their child's ZPD range. | ||
| The AR points are based on 30 minutes of independent reading a day. AR cut-off dates are two days prior to the last day of the nine weeks. |
